Romain Froquet, born in 1982, lives and works in France. Since the late 1990s, he has dedicated his life to painting. A self-taught artist, he builds his work upon diverse cultural influences and reflections on the connections that exist in this world.
He draws inspiration from contemporary artists and pioneers of abstract painting, such as Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Why is this interest in abstraction? It offers an alternative vision. It allows humans to think and see, through their thoughts, things that they might not see with their eyes. Through abstract art, the artist has the power to perceive beyond the tangible, to extract the infinite from the finite. It is the emancipation of the mind, an exploration into unknown territories.
At the beginning of his career, Romain Froquet’s paintings depicted stylized African masks. He appreciates the aesthetics of tribal art, where he finds deep connections that influence his work: the relationship with Mother Earth, the link to deities and beliefs.
If Romain Froquet embraces the idea of integrating art into the urban landscape, it is not solely for aesthetic reasons. It is also a way to create social and communal bonds. He strongly adheres to the artistic approach of the Mexican muralists—Diego Rivera, José Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros—who aimed to make their art accessible to all. In the realm of street art, he pastes unconventional tree drawings in various forms and colors. As an artist involved in urban planning, he collaborates with associations, municipalities, and businesses to “transform” walls, sports fields, or even parking lots with murals or installations.
His creations revolve around the idea of connection. In this world, everything is interconnected: people, natural elements, humans and the earth… and, of course, the artist and his audience. Romain Froquet seeks to grasp these relationships through his artistic projects. By studying aerial photographs of highway interchanges, for instance, he evokes the pathways that link people together. The line becomes his tool to materialize these connections. He also plays with its paradoxical nature: a line can create bonds just as much as it can divide.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the lines drawn by Romain Froquet are often curved and repeated. They start from concrete representations: the outlines of trees or African masks, aerial views of highway interchanges… Under his brushstrokes, trees, masks, and interchanges are reborn into abstract pictorial compositions, sometimes with a calligraphic style. The curves convey a sense of dynamism and movement, which he carefully balances in his compositions.
Romain Froquet has soon sought to diversify his painting surfaces. He, of course, works on paper, but also explores metal and burlap. In his compositions, he frequently varies materials, juxtaposing paint and ink with fabric pieces or fragments of newspaper articles. His murals are enriched with wooden panels or metal elements that add relief. Sometimes, he takes it even further, creating artistic installations with cables or natural elements.
Color is another field of artistic experimentation for Romain Froquet. He enjoys combining and layering different colors while playing with nuances, refining tones, and adjusting the paint’s texture. He sometimes gives his lines a gradation effect, where the density of the curves progressively fades.
By mixing abstract art, urban art, and ethnic influences, while deepening his work on the line and color, Romain Froquet has forged a distinct artistic identity that aligns with his personal aspirations. An approach that gains the interest and support of people invested in contemporary art. The works of Romain Froquet are exhibited in France, Russia, the United States, Mexico and other countries, in galleries or urban development projects.
On this website, Romain Froquet presents a broad selection of his artistic work. You are invited to explore it at your own pace, as if walking through an exhibition space.
